What is Yoga?

Yoga is a way to experience present moment joy.  Through exercises designed to help our body feel more comfortable, our breathing feel steadier, and our minds feel more relaxed, we are able to worry less about the past and future; and focus more on the present.  Even though yoga encourages our spirituality, it is not a religion.  There are many ways to practice yoga; and nobody is expected to look like a young gymnast.

Should I talk to my doctor prior to practicing yoga?

When in doubt, talk to your doctor.  Even though I have the knowledge and experience necessary for working with older adults, there is no substitute for your doctor’s advice.  When talking to your doctor, ask about any necessary modifications for the physical postures and breathing exercises; in order to maximize safety and comfort.

What if I’ve never done yoga before?

It is not uncommon for people to discover yoga in their later years.  I teach in a way that is meaningful for both new and regular students; by offering variations to the poses and encouraging everyone to “listen” to their body.
